OSP’s Resource Team Success
The Oregon Department of Corrections is thrilled to share some outstanding news about the Oregon State Penitentiary’s (OSP) Resource Team and their transformative work with the Behavioral Health Unit (BHU) and Mental Health Infirmary (MHI).
What is the resource team? The Resource Team is a team based in restrictive housing and focuses on supporting adults in custody (AICs) who are self-isolating and other high-risk individuals who need extra assistance to stay on track and to avoid extended periods of time in restrictive housing. Team members receive extensive additional training and dedicated project time to work effectively with the most complex cases.
The Resource Team’s approach empowers staff to work safely and effectively with the highest-risk, highest-need incarcerated individuals. The goal is to significantly increase time out of cell and ultimately support these individuals in living safely and successfully without isolation.
Before 2018, there was not a dedicated Resource Team at OSP. As a result, AICs arriving in the BHU and MHI often faced significant challenges, including self-sabotage and limited support, which hindered their progress and promotion.
Fast forward to today, and the difference is remarkable. Under the leadership of Sgt. Ruiz and Cpl. Counes, the OSP Resource Team has made a profound impact. Their dedication to building strong rapport and investing in the AICs has led to incredible outcomes. Since January 2023 alone, the team has successfully assisted in transitioning 59 AICs out of the MHI and BHU, showcasing the power of personalized support and investment in our AICs.
This achievement not only benefits the individuals but also contributes to the overall well-being and success of our institution. The OSP Resource Team’s commitment to creating better outcomes is truly commendable and a testament to their hard work and dedication.
