Fishing, Family, and Fresh Starts

How much is a day of fishing worth?

At Snake River Correctional Institution (SRCI), the answer is simple: priceless.

SRCI staff and adults in custody (AICs) were honored to take part in a special kids’ fishing event at Bully Creek Reservoir. Families came together to spend the day reeling in fish, sharing a hearty lunch, playing games, drying out wet socks, sneaking in a nap or two, and most importantly, making memories that strengthened family bonds.

Seven AICs participated alongside their children, grandchildren, and younger siblings—eight kids total—accompanied by seven guardians. Each child received donated tackle to take home, helping to ensure the joy of fishing continues well beyond the event. Between the fish fry and the fish tales, it’s estimated 39 fish were caught—and yes, every child landed at least one! We’d say they all came down with a serious case of fishing fever.

A huge thank you to the incredible “Village of SRCI” staff and our dedicated partner, OSP Wildlife Enforcement Officer, who provided law enforcement and wildlife management outreach during the event. From baiting hooks to BBQ, cornhole to casting lessons, every thoughtful detail was met with smiles.

In the words of the AIC participants:

“I just want to thank you again. I had a wonderful day, and I know my son and my dad really enjoyed themselves. We’d love to do it again.”

“It felt like I was able to be a dad—and make my incarceration more than just separation.”

“It was needed time with our family. It showed me what I’m missing and how to keep doing good so I can stay a part of my kids’ and grandkids’ lives.”

“Please continue to do this for AICs. It was the best day I’ve had in many years!”

“It was the best day in eight months.”

“It was an incredible time—and a reminder to make better choices so I don’t miss opportunities like that again.”
