Freedom on the Inside

Recently, the Freedom On The Inside recovery group visited the Oregon State Correctional Institution (OSCI) with their motorcycles, cars, and a powerful message of recovery, embodying the motto “WE DO RECOVER.” Comprised primarily of individuals who have overcome substance abuse and mental illness, the group aims to inspire and guide adults in custody (AICs) towards a clean and sober life.

Many group members have personal experiences of incarceration and found recovery through prison programs. Their visits spark meaningful conversations with AICs about recovery opportunities and future aspirations, often starting with shared interests in motorcycles and cars.

The group provides comprehensive support through aftercare programs across Oregon and neighboring states, as well as a Bridge the Gap program connecting individuals to recovery meetings nationwide and internationally. Their mission is to ensure no one gets left behind, offering resources and encouragement for ongoing recovery.

The event also motivates visitors to volunteer for the Oregon Department of Corrections, sponsoring weekly recovery meetings and providing essential recovery literature. The group’s efforts foster a cooperative relationship with DOC to better address addiction and mental illness, emphasizing the effectiveness of peer support.

We extend our gratitude to the OSCI Administration, Recreation Specialist Jesse Hale, Trish Davenport, Captain Mullen, Sgt. Vela, Officer Zuniga, and Officer Kast for their exceptional support and hospitality. We appreciate the Oregon Department of Corrections’ commitment to these events and their positive impact on incarcerated individuals throughout the state.
